An UnAmerican Business

A radical new look at doing business in Europe

An UnAmerican Business has been written for corporate managers and their many advisors. It is also aimed at corporate employees and shareholders, and all others whose interests are significantly affected by corporate decision-making.

The first part of the book consists of a critical discussion of the objectives, governance and management of America’s large listed companies. Performance, measured by their own yardsticks, is surprisingly poor, leaving a trail of unintended consequences and unaccounted cost. Capitalism deserves better.

Whereas most large European listed companies have embraced the American way of doing business, the role of stock markets in Europe is more limited. This helps to explain Europe’s successful exploitation of a range of alternative enterprise models, from private limited companies and family-owned and managed firms to cooperatives and public private partnerships.

The second part of the book aims to stir up competition among enterprise models, presenting a new enterprise model that will be particularly effective in capturing the potential of eight new growth areas.
